What is MQ Resin?
MQ resin (fully known as MQ silicone resin) is a class of silicone resins with a unique structure. It is a three-dimensional, spherical polysiloxane polymer obtained through the co-hydrolysis and polycondensation of monofunctional siloxane units (M units: R₃SiO₁/₂) and tetrafunctional siloxane units (Q units: SiO₄/₂).
The M units provide organic compatibility and flexibility, while the Q units form the inorganic siloxane backbone, imparting hardness, heat resistance, and weatherability.
Typically possessing a molecular weight between 1,000 and 8,000 g/mol, these resins range in physical form from viscous liquids to solid powders. They are soluble in organic solvents and exhibit properties such as resistance to high and low temperatures and UV radiation, hydrophobicity, electrical insulation, and excellent film-forming capabilities. They are widely used in applications including the reinforcement and tackification of silicone pressure-sensitive adhesives, silicone rubber reinforcement, coatings, personal care products, mold release agents, and electronic packaging. The resin's properties are primarily determined by the M/Q molar ratio and the type of organic side groups (R groups).

Methyl MQ silicone resin: All side groups are methyl groups; this is the most basic and widely used type, commonly referred to simply as "MQ resin."
Methyl-hydrogen MQ silicone resin: Side groups include active Si-H (silicon-hydride) groups, enabling participation in addition-curing reactions.
Methyl-vinyl MQ silicone resin: Side chains contain vinyl groups; commonly used for reinforcing addition-cure silicone rubber and liquid silicone rubber.
Methyl-phenyl MQ silicone resin: Incorporates phenyl groups to enhance high-temperature resistance, radiation resistance, and compatibility with organic resins.
Phenyl MQ silicone resin: Features phenyl groups as the primary organic side groups, offering superior heat and oxidation resistance.
Fluorine-containing MQ silicone resin: Side chains contain fluorine groups, providing low surface energy as well as oil and chemical corrosion resistance.
